How do I choose a surgeon?

Even though medical practices have evolved to the point where patient safety is a higher level than ever before, there is always the possibility of suffering an injury during a surgical procedure. As such, if you are likely to need surgery in the near future, you owe it to yourself to prepare by doing some research. The fact is, not all doctors are equally skilled, and the quality of care they offer can vary greatly.

So on which topics should you educate yourself prior to choosing a doctor to do your surgery? Well, we have a few suggestions.

Of course, you want a top-notch surgeon and not someone who has a problematic history. If you have an interest in a particular doctor, you can get in touch with the state medical licensing board and inquire if he or she has been the subject of any medical malpractice lawsuits.

When discussing an operation with a surgeon, ask them questions regarding how often they perform the procedure. It is preferable to use an experienced surgeon, and a good baseline measurement is five years with more than 30 surgeries annually.

You want to find someone who is highly skilled and confident to perform your operation. So when speaking to a doctor, take note of his or her attitude and communication skills.

But you certainly do not want to undergo an unnecessary procedure, therefore, be sure you get at least a second or even third opinion before committing to surgery.

By investing time in your decision, you may be able to avoid a bad experience and come out of your surgery healthier than before. But even research cannot prevent errors during a procedure. And if you should be injured while undergoing surgery, you could suffer a life-altering or health-threatening injury. In such a case, an experienced medical malpractice attorney may be able to help you get appropriate compensation.
